“Be the best place to live, work and play in Florida for today’s residents and future generations.” -City of Winter Park
Sun Rail. Lake Lillian. Heritage Park. Rollins College. Separate entities that come together to make up the great city of Winter Park. The city has seen many changes and growth since its inception one hundred years ago.
Did you know Winter Park started out as just a park, a main street, and a train station? Since then, the simple vision of the city’s founders has grown to include Park Avenue, Winter Park Memorial Hospital, Winter Park Library, Peacock Fountain, a renewed Fairbanks Avenue, an Urban Forestry Management Plan, Martin Luther King Jr. Park and so much more!
At the beginning of 2015, Mayor Bradley gave his sixth and final City of Winter Park “State of the City” Address. Throughout the speech, he discussed his vision for Winter Park, which included a focus on public safety, education, health and environment. He also talked about how the past and current success of the City of Winter Park played into his vision of the future.
Here’s what we can look forward to:
- The state of Florida received a $400,000 grant towards the restoration of Lake Lillian and will be presented to the Otter Pond.
- Green initiatives including water conservation, solar energy and even new innovative ways of generating electricity. Garbage as fuel, anyone?
In order for the city to continue on its current trajectory, the people of Winter Park need to stay plugged into the city’s goals. It is the involvement of citizens that has the greatest level of impact on the vision and future of the city.
